PSHE
Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive Scheme of Work for the whole Primary School from Nursery through to Year 6. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people of the world.
We strive for an inclusive environment, where everyone feels valued and children can aim high and achieve excellence together. We would like staff and children to respect each other and provide a curriculum and ethos that supports the children’s wellbeing and emotional development. An atmosphere where the children are the centre of what we do. We envision that children will learn to problem solve, resolve issues and take risks with their learning and relationships, knowing that there is a support network to guide them.
The Jigsaw curriculum takes a mindful approach to PSHE, focussing on six key areas of emotional development. The children are encouraged to share their ideas, to support each other and to put the key principles into practise. All year groups cover the same topics, at an age-appropriate level, and these skills are developed throughout their school life. The six key areas of learning across the school are:

RSE
In September 2021, it became compulsory for all Primary Schools to teach Relationship and Health education to children. At Springfield, we understand Relationship and Sex education to be about the emotional, social and cultural development of pupils, and involves learning about relationships, sexual health, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity. RSE involves a combination of sharing information and exploring issues and values - it is not about the promotion of sexual activity.
Jigsaw RSE include four main aims for teaching RSE within Primary schools.
- To enable young people to understand and respect their bodies and be able to cope with the change’s puberty brings, without fear or confusion.
- To help young people develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age, development etc.
- To support young people to have positive self-esteem and body image, and to understand the influences and pressures around them.
- To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.
Restorative approach
To help us create a harmonious school environment we use the restorative approach to help children self-regulate their own learning and behaviour. This approach is based on the four key features of: respect, responsibility, repair and re-integration.
Leadership Roles for Children at Springfield
Springfield offers children a range of unique opportunities to develop leadership skills and forms of responsibility, which will contribute towards developing qualities for the future. Prefects and monitors have a variety of roles including:
