Curriculum
Children in our Nursery and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The EYFS curriculum consists of 7 areas of learning.
The three prime areas within EYFS are:
-
Personal Social and Emotional Development
-
Physical Development
-
Communication and Language
The four specific areas within EYFS are:
-
Literacy
-
Mathematics
-
Understanding the World
-
Expressive Arts and Design
A love for learning is developed through an exciting play based curriculum that children access through both independent play and some focus activities with adults. Children are encouraged to make connections in their learning through a creative topic based approach and a central question that is asked on a half termly basis, linked to our GLF curriculum. Children are able to engage with their learning through an imaginatively resourced free -flow learning environment that enables exploratory and child-initiated play both indoors and outdoors.
We are committed to providing a quality educational experience for all our pupils, in an atmosphere of security, respect and confidence. It is a key priority that our youngest pupils feel secure, happy and confident and that they develop into long life enthusiastic and independent learners. For some children in our EYFS setting, this will be their first experience of separating from their main care giver. Our main aim is for your child to be happy and confident in the time they spend apart from you. This provides them with good foundations for starting school.
Early Years practice is developed in line with ‘best practice’ guidelines and supports the concept of continuous provision, free-flow, and a predominantly child-led learning environment both indoors and outdoors. At the heart of this is the development of communication and language skills through ShREC interactions and targeted Wellcomm interventions.
We are fully committed to the purpose and aims of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (September 2023): https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2
As outlined in the EYFS statutory framework, our schools teach the seven areas of learning and follow progression documents which clearly outline what 2-3 year olds, 3-4 year olds and 4-5 year olds should know and be able to do in each area.
The progression documents for each area of learning can be found here:
Our Maths Curriculum follows the White Rose scheme of Work for the Early years Foundation Stage . Please find below a link to the progression documents for Nursery and Reception;

In addition to White Rose, pupils are given additional support in developing good number sense which introduces our pupils to six key areas of learning in maths ;
-
Cardinality ; Understanding that the cardinal value of a number refers to a quantity
-
Comparison; Knowing which numbers are worth more / less than each other
-
Composition; understanding that one number can be made up from two or more smaller numbers.
-
Pattern; Looking for and finding patterns helps children to notice and understand mathematical relationships.
As a school we follow the HERTS for learning Essential writing program. Please find below the Long term overviews for Nursery and Reception;
