EYFS - Nursery and Reception

Children in our Nursery and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The EYFS curriculum consists of 7 areas of learning.

The three prime areas within EYFS are:

  • Personal Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

The four specific areas within EYFS are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

A love for learning is developed through an exciting play based curriculum that children access through both independent play and some focus activities with adults. Children are encouraged to make connections in their learning through a creative topic based approach and a central question that is asked on a half termly basis, linked to our Cornerstones curriculum. Children are able to engage with their learning through an imaginatively resourced free -flow learning environment that enables exploratory and child-initiated play both indoors and outdoors.

We are committed to providing a quality educational experience for all our pupils, in an atmosphere of security, respect and confidence. It is a key priority that our youngest pupils feel secure, happy and confident and that they develop into long life enthusiastic and independent learners. For some children in our EYFS setting, this will be their first experience of separating from their main care giver. Our main aim is for your child to be happy and confident in the time they spend apart from you. This provides them with good foundations for starting school.

Springfield’s Early Years Vision:

In the Early Years at Springfield Primary School, we believe in providing children from age two to five years with a safe and engaging environment where they have an opportunity to grow, learn and flourish in all areas of the Foundation Stage. This builds on each individuals’ wants, needs and interests and helps them achieve targeted next steps. These small, manageable targets are achieved in a context that is relevant to them as unique individuals who learn in different ways and at different rates. Learning should be fun and we strongly believe in providing quality, meaningful and enriched opportunities across the provision. We value the important role of both the indoor and outdoor environments in developing children’s thinking and resilience skills as well as meeting all Characteristics of Effective Learning. We are committed to giving our children the best possible start to their school life through teaching them the skills and knowledge which will ensure that they become successful, confident, lifelong learners.

What do our parents and carers think about EYFS at Springfield Primary School?

My daughter throughout enjoys all activities and events organised by school.  As far as education is concerned, I can see growth in my child, she has improved her vocabulary.  I would like to thank Mr Holton especially as he puts so much effort in keeping us parents informed of what's happening in the classroom and workikng individually on each child.

Adam is so happy and settled at school, we couldn't ask for more.  He absolutely adores Mr Holton, Mrs Warren and other adults and enthusiastically talks about his learning activities.  The learning is so creative and engaging.  We know he is cared for very well and he feels safe and valued as an individual.  Thank you all so much.

Springfield is a very lovely school, great communication from the teachers to parents.  My daughter is very happy here and is always excited to attend in the morning.

James is very happy to go to school.  He is learning very quickly and eagerly does his home learning and reading.

My daughter thoroughly enjoys school and I am very pleased with her progress so far.

The school has been amazing by helping my child settle into Reception.  My son has a 1:1 and she is amazing with hime.  I couldn't wish for better support for him.

Mrs Conlan is always very supportive, attentive and helpful.  She is always eager to answer any questions I may have about my child.  My son always looks forward to going to class.  All the teacher assistants are very helpful too.
